Every March since 1999, Washington College students have been offered the opportunity to participate in an alternative Spring Break with Habitat For Humanity's Collegiate Challenge. This year, members of the Washington College community will volunteer their break week to journey to Columbus, Georgia, to participate in the challenge, in conjunction with similar groups from other colleges and universities across the country. The Washington College group will travel by van, leaving campus on Saturday, March 10, and returning Saturday, March 17, 2012.
In past years, our group has assisted in every part of constructing a home, from the demolition of old, dilapidated structures to the building and painting of new houses. The Collegiate Challenge in Columbus was the largest collegiate build held in the nation in 2009. This year's challenge will consist of nine schools erecting seven houses in less than five days with a total of more than 200 volunteers. Each year the students who participate in this trip come away with a renewed sense of commitment and a deep dedication to community service and helping those in need.
The students who participate in Washington College's Alternative Spring Break are responsible for raising part of the monies needed to cover their housing and transportation during the Spring Break week. Donations may be made to WC Habitat For Humanity, and may be sent to the Washington College Student Affairs Office, in care of Beth Anne Langrell.
More information about Habitat For Humanity's Collegiate Challenge can be found at: http://www.habitat.org/youthprograms/int/collegiate_challenge.aspx
The fee for Spring Break 2012 is $250.00 per student. This includes food, transportation, and housing for the week. Scholarships are available through Beth Anne Langrell in the Office of Student Development.
