Each March since 1999, Washington College students have been offered the opportunity to participate in an alternative Spring Break with Habitat For Humanity's Collegiate Challenge. This year, 17 students will volunteer their break week to journey to Columbus, Georgia, to participate in the challenge, in conjunction with similar groups from other colleges and universities across the country. The Washington College group will travel by van, leaving campus on Saturday, March 8, and returning Sunday, March 16, 2008. While in Georgia, they will work on Habitat building sites alongside other volunteers, in an effort to replace substandard housing with decent affordable housing for people in need.
To participate, interested students must complete a written application, including evidence of demonstrated leadership service and a recommendation from a peer in a campus leadership position. Once accepted, participating students must commit to being alcohol and drug-free for the duration of the trip.
The students who participate in Washington College's Alternative Spring Break are responsible for raising the monies needed to cover their housing and transportation during the Spring Break week. Donations may be made to WC Habitat For Humanity, and may be sent to the Washington College Student Affairs Office, in care of Beth Anne Roy.
