The Peer Mentors are a group of 35 students who are dedicated to helping First-Year Students become more informed about campus life, better prepared to meet the challenges that face new students in the classroom and out, and more connected to members of the Washington College and Chestertown community. They have gone through an extensive application and interview process, as well as a spring training program and will be your best resource as you make the transition from high school to Washington College.

You have been assigned a Peer Mentor and will hear from him or her over the summer. In addition to being in contact with you and about 12 of your classmates over the summer, your Peer Mentor will also lead you all through Fall orientation when you arrive on campus in August.

Most memorable experience as a First Year Student: Birthday Ball because it was on my 19th birthday and it seemed like everyone knew. I felt like such a queen!

One thing I would not come to college without: My iPod!

One thing I would leave at home: Besides my parents? Probably extra pairs of shoes for more closet space!

Favorite class at WC and why: That is tough! I would have to say Behavior Modification because not only did I learn about how to change behavior, but I actually got to change people's behavior as a part of the class!

Professor I would recommend: Jim Siemen of course! He is one of those professors who you know what you are getting with him! Although his exams are tough, you remember what you learned! He makes his classes fun and always has an awesome story about a patient of his!

If you could be a kitchen appliance, which one would you be and why: I would be one of those things that cuts an apple and leaves the core because I love to get to people's cores when I talk to them and I love being able to let people into my core as well!

Most memorable experience as a First Year Student: Me and one of my best friends, Tri, got the chance to record our own version of the songs "Lean on Me" and "She Will Be Loved." We sounded HORRIBLE but it was so cool to be rock stars for a day.

One thing I would not come to college without: A teddy bear

One thing I would leave at home: Any pre-judgments you have about college because believe me, it will absolutely blow your mind!

Favorite class at WC and why: Acting I: I had the absolute greatest professor (Polly Sommerfeld) and she made every class exciting, silly, funny, and CRAZY!

Professor I would recommend: Lauren Littlefield!!!

If you could be a kitchen appliance, which one would you be and why: I would be a salt shaker because I bring the flavor and I like to shake things up.

Favorite class at WC and why: The History and Philosophy of Sports. The first year seminar allowed me to research corruption inside AAU basketball, giving me real insight when similar issues are debated in the media.

Professor I would recommend: Dr. Gerrity, she encouraged class discussions which really helped me understand the material.

If you could be a kitchen appliance, which one would you be and why: A blender, so I could merge together all my different interests into one.

Favorite class at WC and why: America On Film CNW, I am a huge fan of film and I took some film appreciation courses in high school. We got to watch movies and hold discussions on the meanings of scenes and characters.

Professor I would recommend: Dr. Miller, he is a history professor that just has the ability to involve every student he encounters.

If you could be a kitchen appliance, which one would you be and why: I would have to say the freezer because everyone likes ice cream so people would have to constantly come to me to get it.

Most memorable experience as a First Year Student: That's a really tough one to pick because there are SO MANY great memories I made during my first year...to name one: My first Crew 5K race at The Head of the Schuylkill.

One thing I would not come to college without: Pictures of my friends and family, which soon became my wall paper... It is important for me to see their faces everyday. I am also very glad I brought flannel sheets (so snuggly!!!) and a bicycle

One thing I would leave at home: My Television

Favorite class at WC and why: WOW! Another really difficult choice...My Groups Processes and Counseling course was pretty phenomenal, it focused primarily on experiential learning—which I think is the most priceless aspect of college.

Professor I would recommend: Basically any Professor in the Psychology Department :o)

If you could be a kitchen appliance, which one would you be and why: The Counter Top...it's where creativity is born and memories are made :o)

One thing I would leave at home: books to read for pleasure - your classes will provide you with plenty of reading material

Favorite class at WC and why: Psychopathology 2 because learning about the different mental illnesses can be heavy but Dr. Littlefield teaches it with a sense of humor that makes it very enjoyable and interesting.

Most memorable experience as a First Year Student: Going to McGill University's Model UN in Canada with the Washington College International Studies Council.

One thing I would not come to college without: Dress clothes. You never know when you need to look professional for a dinner or an interview.

One thing I would leave at home: Every book you own. Though it is nice to bring a couple books you enjoy reading, remember that you will be reading many other books. You can always check out your favorites at the library.

Favorite class at WC and why: It's a tie between Shakespeare and my first semester CNW- Generals Cowboys and Company Men.

Professor I would recommend: Professor Harvey. His classes are great and you read a variety of books.

If you could be a kitchen appliance, which one would you be and why: A blender. I like to mix things up.

Favorite Class at WC: Dr. Deckman's class on Media and Politics. As my mom has a Master's in Political Science, I actually used the same materials she used for her classes on the subject, like Doris Graber's Mass Media and American Politics and Larry Sabato's Feeding Frenzy.

Professor I would recommend: Dr. Gillin: Though his classes are always early, he is always insightful, funny, and makes William Wordsworth relevant to current times.

Kitchen Appliance: I would be a blender: I like to bring different things together and attempt to make them all complement each other.

Activities: College Democrats, Intramural Sports, Kappa Sigma, Musician's Union, Student Events Board, Writing Center, Bookstore Employee, etc.

Most memorable experience as a First Year Student: Making a cardboard boat for the Waterfront Festival and pledging for Alpha Chi Omega.

One thing I would not come to college without: A camera! I love to take pictures to help make the memories last.

One thing I would leave at home: drama and negativity—college is a time to be happy and try new things.

Favorite class at WC and why: First Semester CNW Reading, Writing, and Fishing on the Eastern Shore with Professor Hiortdahl. We read countless haunted tales, went fishing, and learned all about the culture of the area.

Professor I would recommend: Professor Scott and Dr. Munson.

If you could be a kitchen appliance, which one would you be and why: A knife so I could cut through any problem thrown my way.

Most memorable experience as a First Year Student: Probably the excitement of meeting so many new people.

One thing I would not come to college without: My laptop (but thats kind of mandatory) so I would say a fan (unless you are in one of the newer dorms).

One thing I would leave at home: All that extra decor that cant be hung up on the walls. Dorm rooms are small enough without having to make space for your childhood collections.

Favorite class at WC and why: Comparative Psychology with Dr. Kerchner. As someone with a lot of interest in animals I found this course to be the most interesting and directly correlated to my plans for the future.

Professor I would recommend: Dr. Spilich and Dr. Kerchner

If you could be a kitchen appliance, which one would you be and why: An ice maker, because im all about the simple pleasures, and ice is definitely one of those simple pleasures.

Most memorable experience as a First Year Student: Cleaning up after the Ben Folds Spring Concert- and then eating breakfast at Waffle House.

One thing I would not come to college without: Posters/wall covers. The rooms are blazing white without them.

One thing I would leave at home: The coffee maker. I use it maybe once a semester. Defiantly not worth the hastle.

Favorite class at WC and why: I took a Tolkien class last semester, which was the most amazing experience considering the bulk of our work was to read Lord of the Rings and discuss it. As a book nerd, it was a dream come true.

Professor I would recommend: Professor Olsen, in the English Department

If you could be a kitchen appliance, which one would you be and why: I would be a refrigerator, because I'm good at keeping things cool and I'm pretty laid-back as a rule. Also I enjoy iced tea.

Favorite class at WC and why: Beginning drawing because I have never experienced or taken any classes that involved art

If you could be a kitchen appliance, which one would you be and why: A dishwasher because I like things to be clean and I like making things neat and tidy.

Most memorable experience as a First Year Student: There are so many, but Birthday Ball was definitely one of the best!

One thing I would not come to college without: Bottled Water (lots of it!)

One thing I would leave at home: A Printer—it is so easy to print for free in the library and you don't want to be the one kid who has to print out everyone's papers.

Favorite class at WC and why: Acting I— it is a great way to become comfortable in a new environment while fulfilling a distribution requirement. The teachers help every student uncover hidden talents.

Professor I would recommend: No one will give you a better crash course in college writing than Dr. Olsen!

If you could be a kitchen appliance, which one would you be and why: A Blender because I love bringing people together for a good time (and because I love smoothies)!

Most memorable experience as a First Year Student: Capture the Flag! No. Wait. Trips to Rita's and Gymnastics Playtime! No. Wait. Drama Department End of Term Parties! No. Wait. What the Cat Said! No...wait...I give up—I can't pick just one...

One thing I would not come to college without: Dry Erase Board Markers. All the rooms have dry erase boards on the doors, and it's fun to decorate yours and/or leave silly messages on your friends' doors.

One thing I would leave at home: Clothes that you know you probably won't wear—they take up space that you could be using for something else.

Favorite class at WC and why: Reading in the Content Area—Professor Scholz is absolutely amazing. I learned so much about teaching from her, and I can't wait to have more education classes with her.

Professor I would recommend: Professor Scholz! She's excellent.

If you could be a kitchen appliance, which one would you be and why: The freezer! I have an ice cream addiction—I would eat all the ice cream as soon as they put it in the freezer...if freezers can do that...maybe I should be a spoon instead...

Favorite class at WC and why: Biology, because I loved Bill Nye the Science Guy and The Magic School Bus as a kid!

Most memorable experience as a First Year Student: My most memorable experience is Birthday Ball. Getting dressed up then dancing and hanging out with my friends all night! What a blast!

One thing I would not come to college without: Cell Phone Charger! — Vital for keeping in touch with people. Without the charger the cell phone is useless

One thing I would leave at home: I would leave behind any ideas of what you think college is going to be like. Come with and open mind.

Professor I would recommend: Dr. Kerchner- He is funny and really makes you want learn what he has to teach you

Favorite class at WC and why: Introduction to World Politics because it integrates many different subjects like history, socio/anthropology, and political science. This course teaches exactly what I want to do as a job someday.

Professor I would recommend: Dr. Jessica Gerrity in the Political Science Department.

If you could be a kitchen appliance, which one would you be and why: A coffeemaker because I'm so perky! No, but seriously, then I would never have to pay money for the ambrosia of the gods (a.k.a. coffee) again.

Favorite class at WC and why: Fundamentals of Visual Design, even though I'm not an art major, I loved this class and I hope everyone takes advantage of the wide spectrum of classes.

Professor I would recommend: Lisa Noetzel, she adds a creative and fun touch to foreign language study.

Favorite class at WC and why: Shakespeare with Professor Moncrief- she is absolutely amazing and keeps you engaged the entire time. Also, any acting class. They're all brilliant.

Professor I would recommend: Moncrief! She's one of those teachers that you just have to have.
