The Center for the Study of Black Culture (CSBC) primary goals are to advocate and support the educational, social, and cultural endeavors of Washington College's minority collegians, faculty, administration, staff, and community members. We provide the Washington College community with cultural, educational, and social events that are unique and illuminate the particular experiences of African-Americans.
We accomplish this by furnishing an assortment of educational programs and cultural events, which serve as catalysts for intellectual, social, and spiritual development in and around Washington College. The Center has been relocated to the first floor of the Casey Academic Center in the space formerly used for the CAC Appartments. The doors to the Center are the last pair of double doors that open onto Martha Washington Square. The Center's hours are posted on the door. Amanda Garbart '08 is the current Student Director.
The Center seeks to preserve and promote African American culture through:
- the development of innovative approaches to provide social activities for the students of Washington College
- assisting high school students become interested in attending a college or university
- to provide a physical space that reflects the perspectives, values and culture of Black students and people
- to provide cultural, intellectual, and emotional support to all Black students and the larger Black community
- to support and challenge students interested in the area of culturally centered leadership, and to be an integral part of the College's effort to provide multicultural education for the greater Chestertown community
